In 2021 I set the challenge for myself to read 52 books. I finished the year having read 54 books!
I found a few trends in my reading this year that were surprising. One, I really got into the Court of Thorns and Roses fantasy series by Sarah J. Maas. Now, I'm not a fantasy girl by any stretch of the imagination. But I really enjoyed her writing and her weaving of feminist themes into the genre of fantasy.
I also enjoyed another series by author Tana French - more hardboiled, this one, about the Dublin Murder Squad. I poured through these books like water: captivating character development, and an intimate look into Ireland.
Most of my reading skewed towards female authors, with a few exceptions: Stephen King's Billy Summers, Stanley Tucci's delicious memoir Taste, and Billy Porter's memoir Unprotected, which reminded me why I left show business.
I've set a new goal this year: 60 books! Wish me luck! I'm already deep into David Michaelis's biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. And with my new love seat from Ikea, I'm eager to bundle up and read. Brrrr...it's 32 degrees outside!
Don't ya just love my new bookshelf as well? Such a nice change from having all of my books piled on the floor.
What are you reading this year?
Rock on, Natalie! I'm going to follow your lead and shoot for 60 books this year, too. I've been into biographies lately (Marie Antoinette, Anne Boleyn, Pocahontas). Looking forward to learning more about these powerful, often misunderstood women!
